En el discurso que pronunció cuando recibió el Premio Príncipe de Asturias de las Letras 2011, Leonard Cohen contó la historia de su guitarra flamenca, un instrumento que compró a la guitarrería madrileña Conde Hermanos hace 40 años. Televisión Española se hizo eco de la historia y fue a visitar el taller de Felipe Conde (VER VÍDEO), donde se siguen fabricando estas piezas artesanales que han tocado desde Paco de Lucía a Lenny Kravitz.

"Haciendo el equipaje para venir, cogí mi guitarra Conde, hecha en España hace 40 años más o menos. La saqué de la caja y parecía hecha de helio, muy ligera. Me la puse en la cara y la olí, está muy bien diseñada, la fragancia de la madera viva. Sabemos que la madera nunca acaba de morir y por eso olía el cedro, tan fresco, como si fuera el primer día, cuando compré la guitarra hace 40 años. Y una voz parecía decirme: "Eres un hombre viejo y no has dado las gracias, no has devuelto tu gratitud a quien la merece: el suelo, la tierra, al pueblo que te ha dado tanto".

THE LEONARD COHEN'S FLAMENCO GUITAR

In his speech when he received the 2011 Prince of Asturias for Literature Prize, Leonard Cohen told the story of his flamenco guitar, an instrument which bought at Conde Hermanos in Madrid 40 years ago. Spanish television echoed the story and went to visit the workshop of Felipe Conde (SEE VIDEO) where these instrumentst -that have played Paco de Lucía or Lenny Kravitz, among others- are still handcrafted.

"I was compelled (...) to go and open my guitar. I have a Conde guitar, which was made in Spain... I pick up an instrument I acquired over 40 years ago. I took it out of the case, I lifted it, and it seemed to be filled with helium it was so light. And I brought it to my face and I put my face close to the beautifully designed rosette, and I inhaled the fragrance of the living wood. You know that wood never dies. I inhaled the fragrance of cedar as fresh as the first day that I acquired the guitar. And a voice seemed to say to me: “You are an old man and you have not said thank you, you have not brought your gratitude back to the soil from which this fragrance arose". And so I come here tonight to thank the soil and the soul of this people that has given me so much".
